Grief is simply a response to loss. Most people who
may have some interest in this topic may be focused on the emotional
response to loss of a loved one.
Grief then has it cognitive, emotional, behavioral and physical
effects on some one who experiences the death of a loved one.
It must be noted that while bereavement is a normal part of life for
all people, it can carry with it a degree of psychological
difficulties, especially when there is little or no support.
We must be aware of the following effects:
Manifestation of Normal Grief:
• Sadness (the most common of all feelings)
• Anger (depending on the circumstances that caused the death)
• Frustration that nothing could have been done about the death,
or the opposite
• Regress - feelings of helplessness
• Guilt and self reproach
• Anxiety (can experience strong panic attack)
• Loneliness
• Fatigue - A type of tiredness that sleep cannot solve (may be
a mood disturbance)
• Helpless
• Shock
• Yearning for the lost person
• Relief depending on the kind of death
• Numbness (This is sometimes experienced early in the grief.
This takes place because there are so many feelings to deal with
one can become overwhelmed. This happens as a protection from a
flood of feeling.)
